After 13 years, 11 versions, and over 5,000 dances, created by a global community of 100,000 dancers, tappr.tv 2.0 for Apple TV is finally getting its first show! In “deeje Presents”, with 10 episodes and 40 dances, I’ll give you an inside tour of the first decade of digital dancing, all from the comfort of your home theater.

There are three special features in the tvOS version of tappr.tv: 3D perspective, controller support, and local broadcasts.

3D Perspective

Dances in tappr.tv are captured and rendered in three dimensions, and during playback on iPad and iPhone you can control the camera view with simple swipe and pinch gestures.

On tvOS, I wanted a similarly simple user experience of the 3D nature of dances. To accomplish this, the dance itself can become the focus, and you can swipe your finger around the touch pad of your remote to tilt the dance side-to-side and up-and-down.

Its both satisfying and teasing, which leads to the next feature…

Controller Support

Yes, tappr.tv supports controllers! Using the joysticks, triggers, and buttons, you can fly thru the dance using 6 degrees of freedom. Tap A to pause/resume the dance, and tap B to reset your position. To start, just add and enable your controller.

Local Broadcasts

A local broadcast means that nearby iPhones and iPads can sync with your Apple TV, playing the same dance in realtime on each screen. Users can navigate to info about the dance and dancers, rate the dance, and control their own cameras during playback.

This feature requires a bit of setup. First on Apple TV, navigate to Settings > Apps > tappr.tv, and enable the local network setting. Then launch tappr.tv on your iPhone and tap the local network icon.
